Europe, America , Value Differences

I agree completely with Timothy Garton Ash about the stupidness of constructing a contraposition between good Europe and bad America, or the other way round. But this should not lead to the conclusion that there are no differences of opinions, values and prospects. These differences are not between Europe and America but within both of them . I also feel uncomfortable between the division of the world in " liberal democracies" and the others. ALso within the liberal democracies there is debate about the direction of development.

CGIAR Knowledgesharing Workshop

The first day during my stay in Nairobi, I participated in the CGIAR Workshop on "Knowledge Sharing in Agricultural Research". Beside interesting techniques for better sharing of tacit knowledge (chat show, Speed dating, World Café) - I know them all from my time as teacher at the German School, I experienced a real Dilemma on this workshop. Speaking about knowledge sharing might significate two totally different situations. The first: Knowledge Sharing between Researchers, this is a straightforward discussion and many things are to be said and to be done.

On invitation of the Guandong Acadamy of Agricultural Science, I visited in May 2006 the Academy in Guangzhou and various institutions in Guangdong Province. I took the oppportunity also for a backstopping mission to Beijing regarding the AGROVOC mapping project.

The work of Chinese experts in Africa could be complemented through a portal that specifically gives access to chinese agricultural science and technology. The portal should be directed to Africa in relevant languages. It should connect to Chinese open Archives in Agricultural Science and Technology, but also comprise technologyoffers from private and public sector. Specific success stories could be collected...

Visit to Department of Agriculture, City of GaoYao

Gaoyao Forestry lesser developed part of Guang Dong Province. Meeting with Information Center that has its own TV channel. DoA land is 550.000 acres . forest covering rate is 57%. Products are good quality rice, vegetables and aquaculture, 130 acres aquacultures. They producing also herbs. there are 500.000 farmers out of a population of 730.000. Producing rice and vegetables for the whole province. Cable tv in 99% of the villages. Some villages only of administrative level. Telephone covering rate 45%. 150.000 telephones. All towns are connected by optical fiber to the city.

A political uncorrect thought on values

Another common criticisms of globalization is the the theory of cultural imperialism by western values. But shouldn't we ask before about the values and why some western values are so successful all over the world at least in the sphere of desire? Thinkings like: - a Human Live is a value by itself and to be defended - the law should rule and not the force - individual freedom is a right of everyone have been codified first in the declarance of independence and the American constitution as a consequence of development of political thinking in Europe.
